Alert # 109

  Village League
                                          Tax Revolt and Reform

                                                                                         August 15, 2006

  WHAT’S HAPPENING?

The Attorney for the Washoe County Assessor agreed with the request received from Attorney Tom Hall to continue the previously scheduled hearings before the State Board of Equalization until after the Supreme Court issues their Decision. That brought everything to a “wait and see” posture. The August 24 and 25 hearings are now “stayed”, so we are “stuck”.

Supreme Court Chief Justice Robert Rose stated at the close of the oral arguments on July 15, 2006, that the Court would issue a ruling in 60 to 90 days. Today is the 60th day, so we may hear something in the very near future. Hopefully, it will be favorable to all of the members of the Village League. Keep us in your thoughts.

WHAT IS THE STATUS OF THE OTHER CASES?

We won the Order issued by Judge Griffin for the tax year 2004-2005, which was appealed by Washoe County to the Supreme Court, where it awaits a ruling. The ruling by Judge McGee also is awaiting a Supreme Court decision, as are three other cases in the courts of Judges Griffin and Judge Maddox for the tax year 2005-2006. The tax year cases for 2006-2007 will be heard before the State Board of Equalization, whenever it is re-scheduled. The true, current Supreme Court ruling is to determine if the tax year 2003-2004 Order issued by Judge Maddox withstands the Appeal of Washoe County.

Are you feeling confused? So are we!!! But, we will keep all of you “in the loop”, as difficult as it is.

You may now understand how difficult it is to keep all of these moving parts in focus. Only our attorneys have it all in prospective and their invoices are pouring in, and must be paid.

Please help us keep our coffers from hitting bottom. We are counting on you !!!

  Sincerely,

  Maryanne
